Food Pantry Program

The Food Pantry Program, one of Area 10's In-Home Services, provides food to low-income, homebound senior citizens of Monroe and Owen Counties. The program presently services over 200 households with 16 routes.

The Food Pantry Program seeks to provide each household with 3-5 days worth  of groceries each month; consumer nutrition and specific dietary needs are top  priority. Dry goods and frozen food from the Food Bank's Meal Share program are  provided. The food supplied is free to the program's clients through the Hoosier  Hills Food Bank, with the support of community food drives and local churches.  We encourage you to hold a food drive!

Volunteer Positions
Area 10's Food Pantry Program is completely volunteer staffed.

  • Volunteer shoppers select food from the Hoosier Hills Food Bank once a  week and help store it for later distribution.
  • Volunteer baggers fill grocery bags for delivery once a month, being  careful to accommodate special dietary needs.
  • Volunteer meal share baggers divide and bag food for quick freeze and distribution.
  • Volunteer drivers deliver the groceries to the people on their route  once a month.
  • Volunteer callers remind clients about delivery dates and assess the  program's effectiveness.
Sign up  to volunteer online or contact Area 10 to find out more.

Who Volunteers?
Many of Area 10's Food Pantry Program volunteers are part of the Retired and  Senior Volunteer Program. The program also receives help from working adults in the community, Indiana University college students, and Girls, Inc.  members, making the program truly intergenerational.

Get Involved
Area 10's Food Pantry Program always needs new volunteers to:

  • shop at the Food Bank
  • prepare grocery bags for distribution
  • drive a delivery route
  • help with the meal share program
  • call clients to remind them of delivery dates
  • help recruit new volunteers.
