Internship Opportunities

Area 10 Agency on Aging has many internships and work-study opportunities year round. Our flexible programs allow us to create a position that will tap into your unique skills. At Area 10 you can use your talents to make a difference in the community and gain valuable experience at the same time. Area 10 Agency on Aging, Inc is seeking volunteers to support the Monroe County Adult Guardianship Program. Volunteers serve as the link between the program manager and the individual under guardianship. This program protects vulnerable and incapacitated adults from neglect and abuse. Volunteers are trained to assist in ensuring the well being, dignity and safety of legally identified incapacitated adults. An orientation and training group is currently being formed.

Organization: Monroe County Adult Guardianship Program (VASIA), a program of Area 10 Agency on Aging, Inc.

Responsibilities
  1. Regular visits to the person to develop a comforting relationship monitor and evaluate individual’s health and appropriateness of their living arrangement. Accompany individuals to medical appointments, as needed or appropriate. Attending and participation in monthly volunteer meetings, and training as scheduled.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Have concern about the well being of seniors and adults in need.
  • Willingness to learn about community services and how to interact with them.
Time Commitment

6-10 hours a month.

Seeking a motivated student intern to assist with day to day responsibilities of the Area 10 Agency on Aging Food Pantry Program. Dependent on student’s availability general responsibilities would vary. The ideal candidate would be interested in learning about the challenges of nutritional needs of homebound seniors and individuals younger receiving disability SSI.

Responsibilities
  1. Complete intake process for determining eligibility of individuals referred to program through case managers, and information and referral or have called themselves to receive groceries through our Food Pantry Program.
  2. Once individual has been determined eligible complete Database entry of new applicant information.
  3. Assist Food Pantry Coordinator in compiling recipes with food available through Hoosier Hills Food Bank to complete a cook book that would be made available to clients.
  4. Organize Food Pantries to prepare for monthly routes.
  5. Assist the location setup on food pantry packing days.
  6. (When needed) substitute on client grocery delivery routes.
  7. Plan, implement, and evaluate community food drives.
  8. Student will assist in picking up food from Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office 2007 and web browsing
  • Must have excellent communication skills via in-person and on phone.
  • Ability to understand the mission of Area 10 Agency on Aging and the focus of the Food Pantry Program.
Characteristics

Intern must possess a pleasant positive personality and a willingness to assist and communicate with people of diverse abilities and backgrounds. The ability to think creatively, with flexibility in mind is a plus.

Seeking a motivated Senior Undergraduate or Graduate level intern to assist with health and wellness programs at our busy Community Center. The Endwright Center, a program of Area 10 Agency on Aging, is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment where adults enhance their well being through health, fitness, support groups, friendship and creative arts programming. Is capable of enhancing our public health programming opportunities and community participation. This position reports directly to the Endwright Center Director, and also works in cooperation with the Fitness Specialist. To best optimize communication with Staff, work is conducted at the Endwright Center, located at Area 10 Agency on Aging in Ellettsville. For this reason, reliable transportation is advisable.

Responsibilities
  1. Researching health and wellness program possibilities for the 50 plus population. presenting ideas to the Director
  2. Plan and implement programs during the interns period of service
  3. Teaching appropriate health-related classes and workshops
  4. Observe members in facility for safety and responding appropriately to signs of distress during activities
  5. Collect surveys tracking impact of health and wellness programming and report to Director
Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be in a field of study that would qualify intern to instruct fitness activities to the 50 plus population.
  • Must be proficient with the Internet, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office 2007
  • Must be well organized and familiar with best practices and safety when working with a senior clientele
  • Must care deeply about improving the health and quality of life for seniors
Characteristics

The intern must possess: an outgoing, warm and friendly personality and be comfortable leading group activities; a willingness to assist and communicate with people of diverse abilities, incomes, interests and backgrounds. An essential quality is the ability to work efficiently and effectively in a busy environment with multiple activities and frequent interruptions. Previous experience in leading fitness/health related classes is a plus.

Seeking a computer-savvy intern to assist with weekly promotions for the many, varied activities taking place at our busy Community Center. The Endwright Center, a program of Area 10 Agency on Aging, is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment where adults enhance their well being through health, fitness, music and arts, computer services, education classes and interest clubs. The ideal candidate would be interested in helping to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for our clients, plus capable of enhancing our marketing opportunities through various medias. Work closely with Office and Technology Manager for social media/web site coordination.

Responsibilities
  1. Writing and submitting press releases in a timely manner (with Director supervision and approval)
  2. Timely database and calendar entries for new activities plus ideas for social media (fb & twitter)
  3. Develop and Implement a plan of action for compiling and circulating program marketing and informational materials.
  4. Dependent of time of internship, assist in the planning and implementation of quarterly newsletter.
  5. Assist Director, as needed, in preparing presentation materials for talks.
  6. Creating program surveys and methods of tracking impact of programming

  • Must be well organized and familiar with standard office practices.
  • Must have good grammar, proofreading and spelling skills.

One internship currently available.

This program matches volunteers to homebound seniors who need light assistance at home. Volunteers are screened through background checks and interviews. Requests for assistance are assessed through a home visit and interview to determine appropriateness for volunteers.

This position reports directly to the Caring Companions Coordinator. To best optimize communication with the Coordinator, most (but not all) work is conducted at Area 10 Agency on Aging in Ellettsville. For this reason reliable transportation is advisable. Responsibilities
  1. Researching program possibilities and presenting ideas to the Coordinator
  2. Assist Coordinator in creation of monthly e-newsletter.
  3. Assist Coordinator, as needed, in preparing presentation materials for talks.
  4. Assist with program surveys and methods of tracking impact of programming.
  5. Assist Coordinator with home visits and administrative tasks.
  6. Increases community partnership, awareness and support of the Caring Companions Program through assisting with outreach activities, media efforts, and educational presentations.
  7. Maintains and updates all program-specific records and data entry of volunteers, clients, and community partners.
Knowledge and Skills

Seeking a motivated student intern to assist with day to day responsibilities of the Area 10 Agency on Aging Nutrition Program. Dependent on student’s availability, general responsibilities would vary. The ideal candidate would be interested in both learning about the many challenges homebound seniors and people with disabilities face, especially with regard to nutrition; and the management, implementation, and impact of the nutrition program itself.

Responsibilities
  1. Student will visit all meal sites to learn the process at each one.
  2. Student will spend time at meal sites talking to staff and clients in order to better know them and better understand the program.
  3. Student may lead or coordinate informative, educational or entertaining presentations at congregate meals sites.
  4. Student will deliver a meal route on a regular basis to get to know clients and better understand their needs.
  5. Student will learn portions of Insite database in order to assist with daily program paperwork.
  6. Student will study and update intern educational materials.
  7. Student will be responsible for recording Healthy Option vouchers.
  8. Student will create nutrition education newsletters for following year.
  9. Student will provide assistance to program manager with most aspects of program.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be dependable, responsible and available some weekday mornings.
  • Must have excellent computer and web browsing skills.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have ability to understand importance of and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to understand the mission of Area 10 Agency on Aging and the focus of the Nutrition Program.
